COACH BURTON: "We need a big year from Derrick Andrew. He
had some big games last year and he needs to build on those games and really
be more consistent. He’s one of our best athletes and he’s going to play major
minutes for us this year."
Derick Andrew's value to the Titans was most evident when he was absent for
the final eight games of last season after suffering a rare preretinal hemorrhage
in his right eye... His all-around athletic ability was critical to the Titans'
zone defense and it wasn't as effective as it had been in those final four
weeks... Offensively, his potential to explode also was missed as he made a
successful transition to the off guard position from the point guard spot he
handled for more than 800 minutes in 2001-02.. If he earns a bachelors degree
before September, he will earn back a season of eligibility.
CSF IN 2002-03: Derick moved into the starting lineup in
game No. 6 and didn't relinquish that role until he woke up with his eye problem
on Feb. 11... He averaged 9.6 points, 2.2 assists and 1.2 rebounds per game...
He had a career game on Jan. 30 vs. Cal State Northridge, scoring 25 points
on 9 of 17 shooting (6 of 11 in the first half) including 3 of 7 from the 3-point
line along with a perfect 4-for-4 at the foul line... He added two steals in
the closing minutes to help preserve the lead... Ironically, two nights later
vs. Pacific he was scoreless, attempting only 2 shots in 33 minutes... He played
all 40 minutes in a short-handed loss at Cal Poly on Jan. 2, scoring 16 points
with a career-high equalling 6 rebounds.
CSF IN 2001-02: He started all 27 games at point guard and
averaged 7.0 points and 3.5 assists... He averaged more than 30 minutes per
game after sitting out the 2000-01 season under the rules of Proposition 48...
His best game came on Dec. 15 in a home overtime victory over Sacramento State...
He scored a season-high 17 points including 10 of 10 from the foul line --
8 of 8 in overtime... He had a second best of 16 points including a best of
three 3-point field goals on Feb. 21 vs. Pacific... His best assist total was
6 on four occasions... He just missed matching Cedric Ceballos' single-game
school record (9) when he was credited with 8 steals at Long Beach State on
Jan. 5.
RANCHO CUCAMONGA HIGH SCHOOL: Four-year letterman at Rancho
Cucamonga High (class of 2000)... Most Valuable Player of the Mount Baldy League
and Player of the Year by the Daily Bulletin as a senior for Coach Bill Moyer...
Averaged 21.3 points, 4 steals and 3 assists per game... Selected team player
of the year three times... Won coach's award as a sophomore... Played both
point and shooting guard throughout his career.
PERSONAL: Born on Nov. 12, 1982, in Fontana... Parents are
Eric and Debra Andrew of Rancho Cucamonga... Has an older sister, Kimberly...
Business administration major who hopes to run his own business upon graduation...
Enjoys movies and video games... Credits Rancho Cucamonga Assistant Coach Derrick
Flowers for having the most influence on his career.
