| COACH BURTON: "Yaphett King is now starting to get into shape.
He is a real smart player, a real team player. I think he’s going to give us
some great moments this year."
Yaphett King was the first player to sign with Cal State
Fullerton under the Bob Burton regime... Another newcomer with winning in his
background, his Redlands Community College team in El Reno, Oklahoma, won the
NJCAA Div. II national championship in 2002... "He is a workhorse who can shoot
the three and also play inside with his Charles Barkley body," said Redlands
Coach Steve Eck... Yaphett broke his foot at home over the Christmas holidays
and missed all but the final five games of last season.
REDLANDS COMMUNITY COLLEGE: Averaged 15.6 points and 7.6
rebounds as a freshman when Redlands won the national title and he made the
all-tournament team... Last year the team advanced to the finals in Hutchinson,
Kansas, where he reinjured his foot "and it killed our chances," said Coach
Eck.... Before the injury he was averaging 14 points, 7 rebounds and 5.1 assists...
The Cougars still finished with a 32-2 record... He played the 2,3 and 4 spots.
LAKEWOOD HIGH SCHOOL: Prepped at Lakewood High School in
St. Petersburg, Florida... Played for Coach Dan Wright... Had a high school
gpa of 3.87.
PERSONAL: Born on Oct. 19, 1978, in Florida... Parents are
Nyewagi Oba and Rhonda Atkins... Sociology major whose goal is to become a
coach and win... Credits Coach Steve Eck for "showing me how to compete and
win"... Was part of a class of 343 students when he got his A.A. degree in
general studies at Redlands... Transferred into Fullerton with a 3.23 grade
point average on 64 units. |
