GAME NOTES: The red-hot Cal State Fullerton Titans host the
UL-Lafayette Ragin' Cajuns in a non-league affair this evening from Titan Gym.
The Cajuns' season has been a complete nightmare thus far, as the team is
currently just 2-8. ULL is in the midst of a three-game losing skid with its
most recent setback coming against Arkansas State by a 73-63 margin. Next on the
schedule for the Cajuns will be a road matchup with McNeese State, followed by a
home contest against Arkansas-Little Rock. As for the Titans, they have played
extremely well thus far and have won three of their last four games, including
two in a row. The last time Fullerton was on the court, the team posted a
convincing 94-65 victory over Bethune-Cookman. Since Bob Burton has taken over
the coaching duties at Fullerton, the Titans are a solid 29-13 at home and have
an eight- game winning streak at Titan Gym. These two schools met earlier this
season for the first-time ever. The game took place in Cajun country, but the
Titans were still able to pull off a thrilling, 91-89 victory in overtime.
The Cajuns' 2-8 ledger can be attributed to their lack of success at the
offensive end as they are currently shooting a lackluster 41.9 percent from the
field and averaging just 65.7 ppg. David Dees and Ross Mouton have been the only
two consistent contributors this season, as Dees is netting 20.4 ppg to go along
with a team-best 6.8 rpg, while Mouton is producing 19.1 ppg. In the team's
recent setback to Arkansas State the Cajuns struggled tremendously on offense,
shooting a meager 34.4 percent from the field while connecting on just 13-of-24
shots from the foul line. Dees and Mouton both tallied 14 points in the setback,
while Willie Lago added 11 points.
Unlike their counterpart, the Titans have been simply sensational on offense
this season, as the team is shooting a healthy 47.3 percent from the floor and
averaging a robust 85.7 ppg. Six players are currently averaging double figures
this season, but no one player is more important than Bobby Brown as the guard
is producing an impressive 22.7 ppg. Scott Cutley has been a beast down low and
is posting 16.6 ppg and 9.2 rpg. Frank Robinson is next in line with 12 ppg,
while Ray Reed is netting 11.6 ppg to go along with a team-high 40 assists.
Justin Burns and Marcus Crenshaw have also done well for the Titans, as the two
players are posting 11.3 and 11.1 ppg, respectively. In the recent victory over
Bethune-Cookman, the Titans shot an eye-popping 60 percent from the field and
connected on 13-of-26 attempts from behind the arc en route to the win. Brown
exploded in the contest, pouring in 47 points while shooting 17-of-20 from the
field, including an amazing 11-of-13 from downtown. The 47-point performance set
a school record and was the second best offensive display in Big West Conference
history. Robinson added 11 points in the win, while Kenneth Alexander tallied 10
points.
The Titans come into this matchup on fire and considering how solid Cal State
Fullerton is offensively, the Cajuns do not have enough talent to stop the
offensive juggernaut.
