GAME NOTES: Top-ranked UCLA appears to be every bit as good as last
season's team that reached the national championship game, and the Bruins are
heavily favored in tonight's non-conference matchup with the Cal State Fullerton
Titans. Fullerton is off to a strong start, as it has won five of its six games.
The club was most recently in action on Saturday when it posted a 76-67 decision
over Texas-San Antonio. The Titans have surpassed the 90-point plateau four
times already, but don't expect a big output tonight against one of the nation's
best defensive teams. UCLA has won all six of its games and has allowed only one
opponent to reach 70 points. On Saturday, the Bruins cruised to a 61-38 decision
over UC Riverside, and all but one of their wins have come by double figures.
UCLA has won all nine of its previous meetings with Fullerton.
Cal State Fullerton has played Texas-San Antonio twice already this season,
and both contests resulted in victory. The Titans posted an 18-9 edge in points
from the foul line on Saturday, and considering they won the game by nine
points, that advantage proved to be the difference. Bobby Brown and Justin Burns
netted 21 points apiece in the victory, and Scott Cutley contributed 12 points
and 10 rebounds. Cutley is scoring 20.7 ppg and pulling down 8.0 rpg, and
although he has only played in three contests thus far, it appears that he will
be a major contributor all season. Brown, who also missed three outings, checks
in with 16.3 ppg, while Ray Reed is netting 14.8 ppg. Fullerton is racking up
90.0 ppg while limiting its opponents to 75.0 ppg, but it is fair to say that
the Titans have not faced a team of UCLA's caliber to date.
UCLA is scoring 80.0 ppg on 51.1 percent shooting from the floor, and the
club is limiting its opponents to 61.5 ppg on 42.0 percent shooting. The Bruins
have already forced 113 turnovers, 44 more than they have committed. Arron Afflalo leads a balanced offensive attack with 16.7 ppg, and Josh Shipp is
contributing 13.5 ppg. Luc Richard Mbah a Moute adds 13.3 ppg and 8.8 rpg to the
mix, and Darren Collison rounds out the foursome of double-digit scorers with
12.0 ppg. In the romp over UC Riverside, Afflalo tallied 13 points, while Mbah a
Moute posted 12 points and 12 rebounds. Shipp and Lorenzo Mata managed 10 points
apiece for the Bruins, who connected on 55.3 percent of their field goal
attempts while limiting UC Riverside to 30 percent shooting. A 39-22 rebounding
advantage also helped the cause.
There is no reason to expect an upset tonight, as UCLA will likely jump on
top early and never look back. Fullerton does pose a greater offensive threat
than UC Riverside did, but the Bruins will win again by double figures.
