Cal State Fullerton loses for the first time this year, falling to Eastern Washington 110-100 on the road. The Titans (4-1), who set a school record for most points in a defeat. The old CSF mark for points in defeat was 96 points, twice back in the early 1960s.
Disclaimer: These notes are paraphrased from a brief conversation with
coach Andy Newman. Some information may not be exact quotes but the
TitanCentral.com did its best to capture the points being made:
- Bottom line and has already been said but the Titans simply hit a wall
and ran out of gas
- Just too many breakdowns defensively. The team knew what they were doing
wrong but were just a step slow and didn't have the legs to pressure.
- Once our core guys get into basketball shape, defense will improve.
- The biggest problem on defense was our guards were not helping the
helper. EWU would penetrate, causing our bigs to step over and help but no
one was stepping over to cover his guy which produced a lot of easy buckets.
- Staff feels this was a one-game anomaly as far as being a step slower.
- Ray Reed was about the only player who looked decent on defense.
- Rodney Stuckey is as good as advertised and will get a shot to play in
the NBA, most likely as a point guard. (He plays wing this year for the
Eagles)
- Roles are now being more clearly defined. After the EWU game coach
Burton had individual talks with each player and explained what they needed
to do to help the team.
- 60 Degrees: That's the temperature drop from where the Titans began
their road-trip in San Antonio (76 degrees) to where they finished in
Cheney, WA (16 degrees).
- Titans are looking forward to being in SoCal and Coach Newman is looking
forward to speaking at the Chalk Talk on Saturday.
