The Titans are off to their best start since 1996-97 at 7-2 while the Wildcats
completed a winless 4-game West Coast road trip and fell to 2-6.
Frank Robinson had 11 points and 7 assists and Kenneth Alexander had 10 points
for the Titans, who trailed only 2-0. Aaron Nelson had 16 points and a game-high
9 rebounds for Bethune-Cookman, which also got 11 points from Jimmy Hudson.
Brown made 17 of 20 shots overall and 11 of 13 from behind the arc. He made his
only two free-throw attempts with 2:27 to play before coming out. The old school
record was 45 points by Jon Brettman on Dec. 12, 1960, vs. Luke Air Force Base.
The previous Div. I record was 38 points by Richard Morton on Jan. 7, 1988, vs.
UC Irvine. The previous 3-point mark was 10 by Ryan Dillon on Jan. 31, 2001,
vs. Boise State. Brown's previous bests were 30 points on two occasions and 7
3-pointers on two occasions.
Brown's point total is the second highest in Big West Conference history, surpassed
only by a 53-point effort by Raymond Lewis of Cal State L.A. on Feb. 23, 1973,
vs. Long Beach State in double overtime. His 11 3-pointers tie the Big West mark
of Chris Brown of UC Irvine vs. New Mexico State on Mar. 13, 1994.
Brown made his first seven shots before missing a breakaway dunk late in the
first half in which he scored 20 points. His other two misses were 3-point tries,
one in each half.
Fullerton jumped out to a 14-4 lead and it was 19-10 at 12:59 with Brown scoring
17 of the Titan points. The Wildcats got as close as 22-20 before the Titans
pulled away. It was still only an 8-point game at 45-37 with 17:35 to play after
Nelson scored inside. But Fullerton went on an 11-2 run to lead by 17 points
at 56-39 and the rout was on.
Fullerton played without top rebounder and No. 2 scorer Scott Cutley, who suffered
a fractured left (non-shooting) thumb in practice earlier in the week. His future
availability is unknown.
Fullerton hosts Louisiana-Lafayette on Wednesday night while Bethune-Cookman
goes home to Daytona Beach, Florida, before a Dec. 22 game at Savannah State.
