Baseball: 2001 Recruiting

Got power? Lefthanded? Chances are you are in Cal State Fullerton's 2002 baseball recruiting class. 14 kids have been signed by the Titans during this early signing period. Of that 14, nine are lefthanded, 11 are position players and three are pitchers.

On paper this is one of the most exciting recruiting classes ever. Most of these kids will be drafted, some of them very high. But if a kid wasn't seerious about coming to Cal State Fullerton the coaching staff wouldn't bother so it's obvious they feel they have a good chance in keeping most of them.

In our draft status, "fair" means 50% or better, "good" means better than "fair". It's really way too early to predict where most of these kids will go in the draft considering they still have one more year of baseball to play. Right now, all the kids are committed to school. A realisic scenerio would be for 60% to 70% of this class to come to Cal State Fullerton. We should know more about the status of these kids during the March, April, May timeframe.

Robert Andrews Outfielder T: Right, B: Right Rancho Buena Vista HS	Spped Demon. Think of a Chris Stringfellow type only faster. Runs the 60 yeard dash in 6.5 seconds. Pure centerfielder with great all-round tools. Comes from same HS as Srtingellow and Travis Esquibel. Also played football.	Will probably be drafted. Good prospect because of speed but have a good shot to keep.
Josh Bartusick 1B, LHP T: Left, B: Left Fountain Valley HS	Has been a key member of FV Varsity Baseball since he was a freshman. Linebacker on the football team. Lefty with a lot of power. One of the better hitters in Orance County. Good arm and can pitch but was recruited as a first baseman.	Will be drafted because of his power and we will have to fight to keep. Fair chance to keep.
John Curtis Catcher, 1B T: Right, B: Left Hart HS	Nice left-handed swing with a smooth stroke (Aren't all left-handers like that?). Will be a very good college hitter. Gap type hitter. can also play outfield.	Will be drafted. Chances are good to keep.
Blake Davis Infielder T: Right, B: Left Fountain Valley	Currently plays shortstop. Skinny kid with a very nice stroke. As good an infielder as there is in Orange County. Great defensive player and will be a solid player for the next 3 to 4 years. Has a lot of upside.	Chance of being drated.
Johny DeFendis Outfielder T: Left, B: Left Brooklin (HS), NY	Another kid projected to be a high draft choice. Can Play all the outfield spots. Great athlete. Knew about the Titans and wanted to come to the west coast. Rates very well accross the board -- throwing, hitting, fielding, running. Runs the 60 in 6.6. Very bright kid.	Projected to be drafted high. Chances are fair to keep.
Scott Moore Infielder T: Right, B: Left Cypress HS	6-1, 180. Has a chance to be the highest drafted recruit in this class. He plays shortstop in HS, left-handed hitter and has power. Actually caught Travis Engle when Travis was a junior. Has a major league arm right now. Ranked No. 19 in the country according to TeamOneBaseball. Publication also said he had the best arm of all prospects. here is his player link.	Projected to be drafted in Top 3 rounds. Chances are fair to keep.
Sergio Pedroza Catcher, OF T: Right, B: Left Northview HS	Good athlete. Wiry but strong. Nice stroke who plays the game at the right speed. Future is very bright.	Chance of being drated.
Brett Pill Pitcher/Infielder T: Right, B: Right Covina HS	Tall, lanky kid. 6-3. good arm strength. Currently throws in mid to high 80s and once his bdy fills out will be a tremendous player. Very good student with a great upside.	Chance of being drated but will most likely come to CSF.
Dustin Scheffel Pitcher T: Right, B: Right Sacramento CC	6-4, 215. Great arm, power pitcher with great stuff. Has been at Sacramento CC three years, sat out first. Sac City's ace which says a lot considering this JC is a baseball factory. Grandfather has a front office job with the Baltimore Oriols so he has the MLB background. This could help because he knows what the sytem is like.	Will be drafted. Chances are good to keep.
Ryan Scheppel Pitcher T: Left, B: Left Lincoln HS, Stockton	Coaches were very excited when he committed. Beat ASU and LBS. Throws strikes, has a good arm. Currently throws in high 80s but should be low 90s by the time he comes to college. QB on high school football team. Has leadership abilities. Another kid with a bright future.	Will be drafted. Chances are good to keep.
Shawn Scobee Outfielder T: Right, B: Right Rio Linda HS, Sacramento	6-1, 205. Possess as good of power as there at the HS level. Big, strong, athletic and will hit a ton of home runs in his college baseball career. Ranked No. 49 in the country according to TeamOneBaseball. Here is his player link. Justin Turner Infielder T: Right, B: Right Mesa HS	Like Jason Corapci, is a former bat boy for Cal State Fullerton. Knows what the program is about. Good, solid baseball player. Good defensive player, headsy player, with a bright future.	Chance of being drated.
Brad Van Winkle Outfielder/DH T: Left, B: Left Sacramento CC	One of the best JC hitters in northern California. Has gap power. A middle of the order hitter in junior college and should be the same at Cal State Fullerton.	Chance of being drated but will most likely come to CSF.
Delwyn Young Infielder T: Right, B: Switch Santa Barbara CC	Very exciting offensive player. Known more as a left-handed hitter and has a chance to have the biggest impact right away of the new recruits.	Already been drafted twice but seems committed to school. Chances are good.
